Tuesday, October 12, 2010— Bond has been set at $75,000 for a Matteson man charged with a stabbing attack on an elderly victim, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Tuesday.

Francis CostelloFrancis Costello, 55, of the 300 block of Briarbranch Terrace in the Timber Ridge Trailer Park, Matteson, has been charged with one count of attempted first degree murder, one count of aggravated domestic battery, and one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The assault happened around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, when the 70-year-old victim was pulling into her driveway after returning home from work.  Without provocation, Costello attacked the victim as she stepped out of her car, pushing her back inside and stabbing her repeatedly with an eight-inch kitchen knife.  The victim screamed and fought back, managing to bite Costello’s hand, at which time he let her go and she fled to a neighbor’s house for help.  The victim was taken to Christ Hospital, where she was stabilized and is in good condition.

Patrol officers arriving on the scene canvassed the neighborhood for Costello, who was arrested and taken to Markham for processing.  Costello admitted to detectives that he stabbed the victim, and he was charged with three felony counts as a result of the attack.  Costello and the victim had a personal relationship, but the victim had not spoken with Costello for weeks.

Costello appeared in Markham bond court today.  His next court date is set for Nov. 1st, in Markham.
