Gender Responsive Training Curriculum

Home > Womens Justice > Gender Responsive Training Curriculum

The Gender Responsive Training Curriculum was published in 2002 with technical assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections. Over a three year period, the Sheriff’s Women’s Justice Programs, in collaboration with many criminal justice practitioners and professional consultants including Marcia Morgan, Dr. Stephanie Covington and Dr. Barbara Bloom, developed the curriculum, “Gender Responsiveness in the Criminal Justice System.”

This curriculum was developed to better prepare staff to understand the complex issues of women’s lives and how to work more effectively with women involved in the criminal justice system. The Gender Responsive Curriculum specifically covers topics directly related to women offenders such as legal issues, mental health, effects of trauma, addiction and overall physical health.

“Gender Responsiveness in the Criminal Justice System” has been certified by the Illinois Local Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and has been incorporated into the Cook County Sheriff’s Training Institute curriculum for all recruit classes as well as in-service training for existing law enforcement personnel. Correctional personnel working directly within the Sheriff’s Women’s Justice Programs receive additional advanced gender responsive training.
